Editing Page Properties
To access the page properties of any page select the Page Properties option from the Edit menu. This will load the Page Properties dialogue box, which allows you to set the Title, Summary, Keywords, Description, Copyright, and Robots information for the page in question.
The Title setting corresponds to the text that appears on the top of your browser naming the page you are on. For instance the title of this page is "Page Properties - Meta Data". TAGGON saves you time by automatically populating the title setting when you create a new page with the label you assigned on your navigation menu. However should you wish to change this name you may do so in this area. When renaming a navigational menu link for example the original page name is retained, this means you may wish to change the name to correspond to the new link name.
Please note that search engines look at the Title of a page to determine its relevance to keywords that are searched for, therefore you should choose a name for the page that best describes the content of that page to improve its chances of being placed appropriately with search engines. Furthermore the title is also used when a user adds the page to their "Favorites" or "Bookmark" lists of their browser. This means your title needs to explain what the page contains well enough that someone can identify it if they have failed to properly organize their list.
The summary is a content summary for your own purposes. In general this will be used to store content comments that other editors, or you yourself feel will be relevant at a later date. This can help to maintain purposeful pages within a web site between multiple editors.
Every page on a website should have a purpose, whether it is to sell shoes, explain a bit about the company, provide contact information. The description allows you to explain what the purpose of this is specifically. The description is generally used by search engines to explain the purpose of a page to visitors. Providing an accurate description of a page will help search engines to properly list the page within their engines.
Please note search engine companies use sophisticated methods of determining relevance, the description is but one of many methods of improving your sites ranking, and more importantly relevancy within search engines, however there are no guarantees that providing a description for a page will have any impact at all on your position with any search engine. This option is provided as a convenience for those interested in search engine optimization, nothing more.
The keywords of a page are the words that you expect people to search your page under. It provides a hint to certain search engines as to what categories you feel the page falls under. Keywords should be entered either seperated by spaces or commas for the most general support.
For example, this page might have the keywords of "TAGGON", "meta data", "page properties", "search engine", etc. To properly input these values into the Keywords textbox you would type in:
TAGGON, meta data, page properties, search engine
OR
TAGGON meta data page properties search engine
Notice that the second option does not seperate phrases, this option will equally value all words listed as your keywords.
The copyright information is to provide both a means of identifying the owner of the copyright that rules the page content, and when applicable to provide a contact address for any issues involving copyright. This information is not visible to the general public and not relevant for search engine ranking. However it can be a good idea to provide this information on all your pages.
This option allows you to restrict the automatic indexing of the page from search engines. Search engine spiders will look at this information to determine if you have authorized them to search your page for relevancy. All the commands for controlling search engine spiders are beyond this article, however the following command is the most commonly used and will restrict the spider from indexing your page. The following line of text must be placed in the robots exactly as shown on a single line with no spacing around it in order to work successfully.
META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX"
If you wish to block the entire site from being indexed the robots.txt convention will allow you to globally set this option. You may either search "robots.txt" on your favorite search engine for more details on this technique, or contact our support staff at the email address provided on the bottom left of this page for further information on this option. |
